Government Relations
Seeking to constructively influence public policies both in Brazil and in the United States, Amcham listens to its members’ opinions to identify common interest issues. The point of view of the business community is expressed during a broad range of events conducted by the organization, such as discussion panels, committees and task forces, as well through continuous contact of member executives with their account managers.
Amcham has played an important role in issues related to the bilateral agenda – such as the dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding American subsides to local cotton producers, the settlement of an agreement to avoid double taxation between the two countries, and the renewal of the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences – and also in what concerns the national agenda, which is the case of regulatory standards, taxation, and the promotion of trade.
In addition to the topics listed by a base of approximately 5 thousand members throughout Brazil, to whom the organization is closely connected, Amcham Administration Counsel annually determines a main focus issue to be approached. In 2010, considering the competitiveness indicators presented by the World Economic Forum and the special characteristics of an electoral year, we have established as priority an agenda to reduce transaction costs in the country. Through a project named “Competitividade Brasil- Custos de Transação” (Brazil’s Competitiveness – Transaction Costs), we have presented a broad and sound set of proposals during the first semester, which implementation by the next government would represent “quick wins”, and intend to discuss it during this second semester with the candidates for presidential succession. And in the coming years, our job will be to make sure our suggestions have become effective actions.
